Christmas in Abruzzo: The best Markets and Villages to visit




In the month of December, the Christmas Markets will liven up the main streets of the city: Villa Comunale, Piazza Duomo, Corso Vittorio Emanuele and the Castello Park, are the indicative places where the wooden houses will be arranged, which will host the exhibitors of refined artisan products, typical sweets and Christmas decorations.

At the Municipal Villa, in the historic center, on the weekend 15, 16 and 17 December the 6th edition of the Harry Potter-themed Christmas Markets takes place with stalls, workshops and animations related to the world of the famous wizard.


In Avezzano, 50 km from the provincial capital, the 6th edition of the "Christmas Magic" event takes place, which includes the Avezzano Christmas Market in Piazza Risorgimento during the month of December. The wooden houses of the Mercatino offer crafts and food and wine products, but also refreshment points with arrosticini, typical local products, fried, waffles and other Christmas delicacies. In the period from December 27 to January 7, the houses will host art paintings.An ice skating rink, Santa Claus's train and the possibility, for the little ones, to pass by Santa Claus's House to deliver the letter. The heated tent theater will host concerts, literary readings, theater shows, cinema and free children's shows. Other Christmas markets in Campo di Giove (AQ), where the stalls are set up in the center of the village (Piazza Duval) and host local artisans and their strictly handmade products. There is also the possibility of tasting the gastronomic products linked to the territory and the confectionery specialties that are traditionally prepared for the Christmas season. For the occasion, the local restaurants offer special menus for both lunch and dinner based on local products. On the other hand, the animations, the shows and the Santa Claus House are dedicated to the children.


Unspoilt nature, hospitality, gastronomy, spectacular mountains, hills as far as the eye can see that gently degrade towards the sea: all this (and much more) is Abruzzo. In Roseto degli Abruzzi, a seaside resort in the province of Teramo overlooking the Adriatic Sea and between the mouths of the Vomano and Tordino rivers, once the summer is over, winter is celebrated with a Christmas appointment board that for 2023 takes the name of "Christmas in Roseto".

This year there are no Christmas markets, but many events involving the center and hamlets with appointments for everyone such as shows, concerts, nativity scenes, animation, tombolades and many surprises from December 8, 2023 to January 7, 2024, including the Christmas Village in Piazza della Libertà (8-9-10-16-17-23-24 December), the amusement park and the ice skating rink (until January 10, Piazza della Repubblica).


In addition, the calendar of Christmas events organized by the Municipality of Montorio al Vomano (Teramo), as part of the Gran Sasso Live - Winter Edition event, has already started. A billboard full of appointments with the children at the center.

From December 8 to January 6, the great tournament of Stù returns, curated by the association Il Colle e il Solleone.

There are many appointments at the cinema, from Little Red Riding Hood to the musical concert, and at the cloister of the Zoccolanti, including “Fables and legends of Abruzzo” by Anna and Laura Bongiovanni and the photographic exhibition “Strade”, curated by the White Cross, with the artistic direction of Giuseppe D'Adiutorio and Paolo Di Giosia. The exhibition will be inaugurated on Friday, December 15 at 3:30 p.m. and will be open until Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

On December 17 there will be “La marathon dello Stù” by the Montorio running group and Christmas in via settebrini, by the San Gabriele association, and the meeting with the author “L'età fragile” by Luciana Del Grande.

On December 29th at 9 p.m. at the parish of San Rocco the Christmas concert will take place by the Santa Cecilia association.

The new year will open with the traveling nativity scene through the streets of the historic center starting at 5 p.m.

On January 5, the Musica Antica concert of the Ensemble '900 association will take place at the parish.

The events will conclude in the afternoon of Sunday, January 7 in Piazza Orsini with the theatrical show “Le dodici notti della Befana”, in collaboration with Rete8 and “Aspetando la Befana” and “Caldi Abbracci” by the National Fire Association National Fire Brigade GRISÙ and Gruppo Alpini Association.


Also in the Teramano, from Friday 8 December to Sunday 7 January in Castel Castagna (Teramo), the appointment with La casa di Babbo Natale is renewed, an event that has now reached its eighth edition.

The great inauguration will take place on the day of the Immaculate Conception in the area in front of the Abbey of Santa Maria di Ronzano with gadgets as a gift for the little ones, free admission and the presence of the real reindeer of Santa Claus. Then the House will be open from 9 to 22 December in the morning, from 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m., and in the afternoon from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., and from 23 to 26 December in the afternoon, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
