Giro d'Italia 2023: The wonderful stages of Abruzzo

In Abruzzo the great start of the Giro d'Italia 23: the Abruzzo stages reflect the peculiarities of the territory, able to offer, in the turn of a few kilometers, the pleasantness of the coast and the majesty of the mountains.

Giro d'Italia 2023: the Great Start will be in Abruzzo. From the Costa dei Trabocchi to Teramo, the Aquila and the Gran Sasso. For the second time in the history of the event we start from Abruzzo, 21 years after the start from Pescara, the pink race will start from this region: appointment on Saturday, May 6, 2023 in Fossacesia Marina with an individual stopwatch of 18.4 kilometers and arrival in Ortona on a slight climb under the imposing Aragonese Castle. The peculiarity of this test is that it will take place for 17 of the 18.4 kilometers on the Via Verde-Costa dei Trabocchi cycle path, obtained from the old headquarters of the Adriatic railway and transformed into a green road of 50 kilometers distributed over 8 municipalities, available to bike and walking enthusiasts. It is one of the most evocative coastal stretches of Italy, among the beaches of the Abruzzo Trabocchi, the wooden fishing machines sung by the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio. The Trabocco for centuries has been a means of sustenance for many generations of fishermen. It can be assumed that man invented them to avoid facing the open sea for fishing and to minimise the risk of bad weather. From historical documents it can be deduced that in 1240 the overflows already existed on the Abruzzo coast.

Three stages are planned in Abruzzo, and will touch all four provinces, L'Aquila, Pescara, Teramo, Chieti and the Gran Sasso, a mix of routes that meet the expectations of both sprinters and lovers of uphill arrivals. The Abruzzo stages of the Giro 2023 also reflect this time the peculiarities of the territory, capable of offering, in the turn of a few kilometers, the pleasantness of the coast and the majesty of the mountains. A unique opportunity to combine sport and promotion In Pescara there will be all the preliminary operations of the Giro d’Italia and the presentation of the 22 teams and 176 runners in the race. The first stage is all in the province of Chieti; the second touches the provinces of Teramo, Pescara and Chieti; the third takes off from Chietino; the seventh arrives uphill on the Gran Sasso in the province of L'Aquila. The second stage, on Sunday, May 7, will start from Teramo and will end in San Salvo after 204 kilometers: it is moved in the first part before arriving at the coast and following it until the finish, with some deviations on the climbs of Silvi Paese and Chieti. It's a day for sprinters. On Monday, May 8, the third stage will start from Vasto to the south. The Giro will return to Abruzzo on Friday, May 12 with the seventh stage, which involves a severe uphill arrival at the 2135 meters of Campo Imperatore, on the Gran Sasso. It will be the first goal of this edition above 2000 meters: it will arrive from the south, climbing Roccaraso and the climb of Calascio. Campo Imperatore has already been the place of arrival in 1999, with the victory of Marco Pantani in the snow, and then in 2018 with the success of the pink jersey Simon Yates. The climb measures 26,450 km and begins at Santo Stefano di Sessanio, 1230 meters. The first 10 km have an average slope of 4%; then 9 undulating km with sections even slightly downhill; finally at 18.9 km the road rises decisively with the first 3 km at 4.1% average and peaks of 6%, and then with 4,450 km at 8.2%. The final part is the hardest part of the climb with spikes of 13% in the last kilometer. The Casetta di Trignano is located in a barycentric position with respect to the ‘marine’ and ‘mountain’ stages, thus offering an excellent
