Abruzzo, an enchanting region located in the heart of Italy, is famous for its rich wine tradition and the harvest is one of the most anticipated and celebrated moments of the year. Every autumn, the hills of Abruzzo come alive with frenetic activities while the ripe grapes are harvested and transformed into delicious wines. Exploring the magic of the harvest in Abruzzo, discovering the traditions, passion and art that surround this fascinating process is something not to be missed if you are thinking of leaving for a few days, right at this time. The harvest period represents, in the Abruzzo popular tradition, a moment of union and sharing of a good as simple as it is precious: grapes. Villages in celebration, cellars full of laughter and joy, long tables in which the simple and genuine flavors of the past are savored and the stories of the elders are renewed in the minds and hearts, with their wisdom and their deep attachment to the Earth and its products. A Land to be valued, to be loved, as only those who have Abruzzo in their blood can do. A land that covers the hills with vineyards, giving us a gift of fantastic landscapes in which to abandon ourselves won by the beauty of nature, debria of the taste of good wine.

There are many shades of scents and colors: from the bright green in late summer to the intense red of the autumn vineyards, when the air will be more pungent and chestnuts will be eaten in front of the fire, sipping an excellent glass of wine, the result of the harvest, processing and wisdom learned by the peasants over the years. Abruzzo is blessed with a picturesque landscape of hills and mountains that extend to the Adriatic Sea. This varied and fertile soil offers an ideal environment for growing grapes. The vineyards of Abruzzo thrive in this Mediterranean climate with cold winters and hot summers, contributing to the production of high quality wines. Harvesting is a ritual that traditionally takes place between September and October, when the grapes reach their maturity. The exact date may vary depending on the climatic conditions and the type of grape. Choosing the right time to start the harvest is crucial, as it determines the aromatic profile and degree of ripeness of the grapes, key factors for the production of high quality wines. Local families and communities come together to harvest the grapes by hand, often in a very laborious way. Groups of harvesters gather in the vineyards at the first light of dawn, armed with shears and baskets. This artisan practice dates back to centuries and represents a deep link with the land and agricultural traditions of Abruzzo.

Usually the harvest in Abruzzo begins in early September with the harvest of Pecorino, Passerina, Cococciola and Trebbiano. Only at the end of October, however, will the collection of the red grapes of Montepulciano take place. It is worth remembering that Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is one of the most renowned wines in the region and has gained important international standards. But grapes are not just wine. Grape is also jam, called “scrucchiata”, characteristic for the total absence of sugar; cooked must, with its unmistakable sweet and full-bodied taste, and many sweets based on grapes that in the winter fill our tables, and our hearts.

If you visit Abruzzo during the harvest, you will immerse yourself in a wine culture rich in history, beauty and taste and you will have the opportunity to taste some of the finest wines in Italy. It is also possible to have an operational experience of harvesting, under one of the references in the area.
