Trekking in Abruzzo: The longest horse trail in Europe.

Ippovia Gran Sasso d'Italia, 470 km and 3 provinces.

Ippovia Gran Sasso d'Italia, 470 km, 3 provinces and 65 localities for the longest horse-tourism trail in Europe.

Woods and hills, white roads and mule tracks, hilly environments and plateaus, high-altitude landscapes and medieval villages. The unpaved natural paths make the experience unique and unrepeatable with long or short circuits that require due preparation and a few days to complete them. The entire route crosses the territory of three provinces: L'Aquila, Pescara and Teramo.

Along the itinerary, horse riding enthusiasts can rest thanks to the many water points, troughs and natural springs that have recently been renovated.

To guide the riders, innovative signage was created in addition to shelters and hostels.

Rest and stopover areas equipped with shelters for horses have been set up, such as the Paladini complex (municipality of Crognaleto), equipped with a guest house with 50 beds, a restaurant, an information point and a stable which can accommodate up to ten horses.

During the "equestrian journey" you can visit 'agriturismi' thus being able to taste the typical specialties of the area and also specialized equestrian centers that favor refreshment or a better welcome for the horse and rider. Enthusiasts can travel these paths with their own horse or rent it in the structures located along the paths.

The routes currently cover 470 km in over 65 places of scenic, naturalistic, historical and cultural, wine and gastronomic interest, for 36 Municipalities of the Park and of the Navelli Plain in the provinces of Teramo, L'Aquila, Pescara.

The entire horse trail is divided into 4 branches (north - east - south - west) with 58 sections of the route.

The new integrated system of equitation tourism offer guarantees a practicability of approx. 470 km of sections with only accompanying services, with your own horse or for hire, by local FISE - FITE Trec Ante technicians.

The 4 Branches of the Horse Trail:

  1. Branch of the Cistercian monks: East branch close to the sea; in history it was under the dominion of the Cistercian Monks.

  2. Colli and rest branch: West branch where there are lakes and streams. In history, an ideal place for pastures.

  3. Ramo degli Eremi e del Corno: North branch close to the sea and the main peaks where hermitages and sanctuaries are located.

  4. Branch of the tratturo Magno and fortified villages: South branch where the fortified villages that overlooked the tratturo Magno are located; route, since Roman times, for the trade of livestock and wool.

  5. Campo Imperatore: The central heart of the whole horse trail made up of a plateau that extends for over 40 square km, at an altitude of 1,600 meters surrounded by all the most important peaks of the Gran Sasso.

On the Teraman side the most significant stretch is the one that favors the path of the northern slopes of the Gran Sasso d'Italia in the direction of Rigopiano, to the east, and of Nerito and Cortino, up to the Monti della Laga, on the opposite side, rejoining at the ends with the route on the L'Aquila side which crosses the valleys and medium-altitude plains between Lake Campotosto, the Voltigno plateau and Capestrano.

The route of the L'Aquila side, unlike that of Teramo, much more oriented towards the exaltation of the environmental and landscape qualities, enhances in an absolutely unique way the great historical-artistic heritage made up of villages, castles , abbeys and fortified centres. This is the case of the ancient Barony of Carapelle, with the famous villages of Santo Stefano di Sessanio, Castelvecchio Calvisio, Castel del Monte, Calascio, Barisciano, as well as imposing centers such as Capestrano, famous for its Italic warrior. On this side, however, there is no shortage of beauties of great naturalistic interest such as the Campotosto lake or the Vasto valley, not far from the extraordinary Chiarino valley, straddling the provinces of L'Aquila and Teramo.

The connection route with the Pescara area, which crosses the Rigopiano valley, under the imposing north face of Monte Shirt, near the historic Castelli, is linked up with the one in L'Aquila, touching places of incomparable beauty such as the Val d'Angri, famous for the presence of chamois, the wildlife area of the Park, and Farindola, even more famous for its legendary pecorino cheese.

Booking is possible for the guides of the Nexum Equum Project on the website www.ippoviagransasso.eu.
